Science & Technology of CoolSculpting: How Does It Work?
Created By Harvard Scientists/Background:
Two brilliant Harvard Medical school Dermatologists, Dieter Manstein, MD and R. Rox Anderson, MD described “Popsicle Panniculitis”. They observed that children, who were sucking on Popsicles, lost their Cheek fat. In addition, women who rode horses in the cold noted loss of fat in their Inner thighs (Equestrian Cold Panniculitis).
This observation that Cold can selectively eliminate fat cells without damaging the skin above, or the nerves and blood vessels below, lead to the science of Cryolipolysis, the patented technology of CoolSculpting. The term Cryolipolysis, essentially means Intense cold (Cryo), destroying and causing Fat cell death (Lipolysis).
CoolSculpting safely delivers precisely controlled cooling to gently and effectively target the fat cells underneath the skin. The treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), which are killed through programmed cell death (Apoptosis). Over time, your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates these dead cells, leaving a more sculpted you.
Destroy Only Fat with Cooling
Subcutaneous fat is the “pinchable” fat that is directly under the Dermis (Deeper skin layer).
Visceral fat is the deep fat stored in the Belly around the Internal organs (Pancreas, Intestines, Liver).
In Adults, the total number of Fat cells (Adipose tissue) is set by Adolescence. With weight gain & weight loss, the volume of lipids (fat) in fat cells, increases or decreases respectively, but the number of Fat cells remain the same.
Other body Contouring technologies (Liposuction, Lasers, Heat) can potentially harm the Skin and surrounding tissues.
CoolSculpting selectively targets & freezes away subcutaneous fat (Fat under the skin) without damaging other structures in the Skin (Skin cells, Nerves, Blood vessels…).
Fat cells freeze at higher temperatures than surrounding tissues. The primary mechanism for Fat cell injury is the formation of Lipid crystals in the frozen fat cells, which triggers Apoptosis (programmed cell death).
An essential step in Apoptosis is the presence of proteolytic (protein destroying) enzymes. Research studies have shown the presence of Caspase-3 (known as the Executioner) in the killed fat cells, as proof of Apoptosis.
Once these fat cells are eliminated, a patient will have less opportunity to store lipids in the area where CoolSculpting is done.
Following CoolSculpting, Ultrasound showed >33% reduction in the thickness of the fat layer at 90 days.
Unlike liposuction, with CoolSculpting, the fat layer reduction is over a period of weeks to months. Therefore it produces long lasting results that look natural. Following treatment, the skin over the treatment area and the surrounding areas look normal without any sagging.
