Do Hashimoto’s Patients take Medication for Life?
The short answer is probably not. It, however, depends on the individual patient.
Traditionally, Hashimoto’s disease is thought to be irreversible in most patients. However medical literature has reported that about 10 to 20% of patients can have complete remission even without thyroid medications (1, 2, and 3).
Patients with Hashimoto’s on Thyroid medications who are stable and have gone through Integrative Medicine strategies to help reverse Hashimoto’s, should be tested for anti TPO antibodies and have a Thyroid Ultrasound.
If the anti TPO antibodies are no longer positive, the Thyroid ultrasound shows normal thyroid tissue suggesting regeneration, a TRH stimulation test can be done.
The TRH stimulation test is a great tool in patients who have obvious symptoms of Hypothyroidism with normal TSH levels as well as to demonstrate Thyroid regeneration so that they can be weaned off Thyroid medications safely.
However Thyroid medications (Nature thyroid, Armor thyroid & WP Thyroid) have several other beneficial effects (Reducing Body fat, Cholesterol, Triglycerides, LDL, Improving Memory, reducing Dementia) that may warrant continued long term use.
