What is Low T (Low Testosterone)?
Testosterone is the hormone responsible for the development of male puberty features (Mustache, Beard, Male voice…). It is also important for maintaining health & wellness, Body composition, energy, mood and sexual function. It helps develop Physical stamina, improves Muscle mass and is also important for several metabolic functions of the Liver, Bone, Prostate and production of Red blood cells by the Bone marrow.
Low T is diagnosed when the levels of Testosterone drop below <450ng/dL. However the presence of symptoms along with a Low T level is more diagnostic.
Hormones play a very important role in both Men and Women. Andropause in Men is similar to Menopause in Females. When Males enter their 40’s to 50’s, Men experience symptoms of declining Hormone levels, particularly Testosterone. The decline of Testosterone Levels is not as precipitous or quick as in Women, but the resulting effects are just as important.
The levels of Hormones start to decrease as early as the 20’s. Throughout life, there is a steady decrease in Hormone levels at the rate of about 1% per year. When we reach 40’s to 50’s, the drop in Testosterone levels is significant enough to manifest with signs and symptoms of Andropause.
The presence of Visceral Fat (The Belly fat present in between the Abdominal Organs) increases the risk of Heart Attacks and Stroke. Testosterone, Estradiol and Growth hormone decrease the amount of Visceral fat, thereby reducing the risk of Heart Attacks and Stroke.
Bio-Identical Testosterone replacement therapy in men is very safe and protects against chronic diseases.
What is the incidence of Low T?
Approximately 30% of men (13 Million men in the USA) in their 50’s will have levels low enough to cause symptoms and health risks. While most women proactively seek medical attention for hormone replacement, men tend to suffer silently and try to cope with symptoms even though testosterone replacement therapy has been available for over 50 years. Only about 5 % to 10 % of Men with Low T seek treatment.
Signs and Symptoms of Andropause:
- Loss of energy
- Loss of mental clarity/Poor focus
- Loss of memory
- Decreased libido / Erectile Dysfunction
- Loss of Muscle Mass
- Aches and pains / Arthritis / Degenerative Joint Disease

Why do men hesitate to seek treatment?
In the past, Testosterone was abused by some athletes as a performance enhancing agent. This made the DEA label Testosterone as a controlled Substance. This gave Testosterone a fearful reputation. In addition, the perception that Testosterone causes Prostate Cancer instills fear and hesitation among Men.
Testosterone and Cardiovascular Disease
Several studies have shown that Low Testosterone levels in Men increase the risk of Cardiovascular disease. In fact, Low T is considered as an Independent risk factor for Cardiovascular Disease, High-grade Prostate cancer, Alzheimer’s dementia, poorly controlled Diabetes Mellitus and Osteoporosis.
Testosterone and Prostate Cancer
Numerous studies have shown repeatedly that Testosterone does not cause Prostate cancer. In facts studies were done by Dr Morgantaler et al, at Harvard, has shown that Men with Low Testosterone levels are at risk of getting more aggressive Prostate cancer. Testosterone may increase the growth of existing cancer. Hence it is important for your Physician to monitor your PSA on a regular basis, while on Testosterone replacement therapy.
