DHEA: “Super Hormone”/The Hormone that “Does It All”
DHEA is a hormone secreted primarily by the Adrenal Glands. It is a precursor to Testosterone, Progesterone and Estradiol. DHEA has various important roles in the Body, including its effects on the Brain, the Heart, Bones & Muscles, Body fat and Immune functions.
The levels of DHEA decrease with age and thus need to be supplemented for maintaining Ideal Health & Wellness.
Roles of DHEA:
Central Nervous System: DHEA acts as a Natural Anti-depressant by Improving mood, memory, sleep and promoting Health & wellness. DHEA has recently been shown to have Neurotransmitter activity
Immune System: It stimulates the Immune function by activating T cells to fight Bacterial & Viral Infections. Recent studies have shown that DHEA acts as an Anti-stress hormone by reducing the effects of Stress on the Immune System. & has Anti-Cancer properties by enhancing the Immune system.
Cardiovascular System: DHEA reduces the risk of Heart attacks and Stroke by decreasing Cholesterol levels and prevents Atherosclerosis by decreasing Lipid Peroxidation (Oxidation of lipids in arteries). Low DHEA levels are associated with high levels of Atherosclerosis, whereas a High DHEA level slows down the development of Atherosclerosis
Blood Clotting: DHEA Inhibits synthesis of Thromboxane A2 (Blood clotting factor), reduces Plasminogen activator (Blood clotting factor) thereby decreasing platelet clumping (aggregation) and decreased blood flow (Ischemia)
Metabolic Syndrome & Diabetes: DHEA Improves Insulin Resistance in Metabolic Syndrome by increasing Insulin Sensitivity. DHEA, Estrogen, Testosterone and Growth Hormone prevent Diabetes by reducing Insulin levels and requirements
BONES & BMD (Bone Mineral Density): DHEA Prevents Osteoporosis, by increasing bone density. A twelve (12) month study of Bone mineral density in Post-Menopausal women on DHEA supplementation showed improvement in Osteoporosis. An increased in Osteocalcin (Hormone for Bone formation) was seen indicating that DHEA promotes Bone formation.
MUSCLE & JOINTS: DHEA is responsible for healing and repairing Joints & builds Muscle and Protein (Anabolic hormone), by converting a Catabolic (Breakdown) state to an anabolic state. Prasterone (GL701), a pure form of DHEA at 200mg/day resulted in 65% improvement in patients with SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus), with long lasting benefits.
BODY FAT & CHOLESTEROL: DHEA increases Lipolysis (Breakdown of Body fat particularly), and decreases Cholesterol levels. DHEA, Estradiol, Testosterone and Growth Hormone reduces VISCERAL Fat (Deep Belly fat in between Organs), thereby reducing the risk of Heart Attack and Stroke.
SEXUAL FUNCTION: DHEA increases energy & Libido by stimulating Testosterone levels.
AGE MANAGEMENT MEDICINE: DHEA has been shown to slow the Aging process in Animal Studies, which supports a possible role for DHEA in Age Management.

DHEA Serum Levels and Monitoring
DHEA Serum levels progressively decline with Age
In Women, the Ideal level is 200 to 250 ug/ml
In Men, the Ideal level is 500 to 600 ug/ml
Serum testing should be done for DHEA-S and not DHEA since DHEA-SO4 is the active molecule
The goal of replacing DHEA is mainly for its systemic benefits, which are mediated by conversion to Testosterone and Estradiol. 7-Keto DHEA is not a precursor to Testosterone, Estradiol or Progesterone. Therefore it is important take DHEA and not 7-Keto DHEA.
Check to make sure the patient is taking the right dose and is compliant. Serum DHEA levels are restored to Ideal levels within 2 weeks of supplementation.
DHEA raises the levels of Testosterone slightly in Women but not in Men. Therefore Women should take lower doses, while Men can take higher doses.
DHEA raises the levels of Estradiol slightly in Men.
The type and quality of DHEA taken is very important to get the desired beneficial effects. The Ideal DHEA supplement should be a Micronized, SR (Sustained Release) preparation. Most of the DHEA supplements available Over the Counter are not micronized. At Ageless Integrated Medicine we provide the best quality Micronized DHEA supplements for our patients.
DHEA Side Effects & Contraindications
Acne & Hirsutism: Due to stimulation of Testosterone. These side effects disappear or can be reduced by decreasing the dose, or by taking Spironolactone.
DHEA is contraindicated in the presence of Active sex hormone responsive tumors (Breast, Ovarian, Uterine, and Prostate) (Research in Animal studies has shown DHEA to prevent Cancer. Human studies are required) DHEA has been shown to have anti-proliferative properties.
