Is it a natural part of aging?
Menopause is the Permanent cessation of menstruation and fertility. It is defined to happen 12 consecutive months after a woman’s last menstrual cycle.
Menopausal symptoms (Physical and Emotional) vary from one person to another in severity. Typically, Menopausal symptoms are seen naturally when a woman is in her mid to late 40’s, or after a Total Hysterectomy (Removal of both Ovaries and Uterus). In the recent years, Menopausal symptoms are being seen naturally in younger women as early as during their mid to late 30’s. This could be due to External factors (Processed foods and Meats fed with Hormones, Toxins…)
Menopausal symptoms should be treated like any other symptom. Recurring symptoms of Fever, Weight loss, Loss of appetite may indicate an Infection, Lupus, or Cancer. Similarly, Menopausal symptoms can offer early clues to patients and Physicians about the effects of declining levels of Hormones on the various Organ systems. It offers clues to explore the underlying cause.
Many people including some doctors believe that Menopause is an inevitable part of life and you have to just live with it. As symptoms such as Depression / Anxiety, lack of energy, lack of sleep worsen over time, your physician may prescribe Antidepressants or Sleep medications.
While these medications can work as temporary fixes, they do not address the underlying cause (Declining Hormone levels). Furthermore, these medications can worsen your declining hormone levels.
What are the symptoms of Menopause?
Some of the Menopausal symptoms include:
- Hot flashes / Night sweats
- Irritability / Mood swings
- Lack of Energy / Burned out feeling
- Vaginal Dryness
- Loss of Skin tone
- Decreased Sleep / Insomnia
- Osteoporosis / Fragile bones
- Loss of sex drive
- Loss of mental focus and multitasking skills
Symptoms of Menopause can mimic symptoms of Hypothyroidism (Low Thyroid). In addition, menopausal symptoms may be indicators of underlying medical conditions and overall health & wellness. Therefore, doing a thorough, comprehensive Hormone panel bloodwork is essential to help identify a possible hormone imbalance.
Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy Vs Traditional Hormone Replacement
When these symptoms become unbearable, patients are often prescribed Synthetic Hormones. The Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study used Synthetic hormones called Premarin (Synthetic Estrogen derived from Horse’s Urine) and Provera (Medroxy Progesterone Acetate), which were shown to increase the risk of Breast Cancer and Venous blood clots. It was shown later that the presence of Horse Antigens (Equilin and Equigenin) in these hormones is what increased the risk of Breast Cancer.
Bio-Identical Hormones, on the other hand, are derived from Plant sources (Yams or Soy). The molecular structure of these hormones is exactly IDENTICAL to what your own body produces. So it essentially replaces what has been lost due to Aging.
In addition to providing relief of symptoms of Menopause, Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) can help increase Quality of life and potentially help prevent occurrence of Chronic diseases including but not limited to Osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s dementia, Cardiovascular disease…. by reducing Visceral fat, increasing Muscle mass and helping lead an active life.
Loss of Skin tone and elasticity is often the result of decreasing levels of estrogen. Ideal Estradiol levels promote Collagen matrix formation thereby maintaining firm and supple skin. Decreasing levels of Estrogen can result in reduced Collagen matrix production which manifests as Dry skin, flattening of upper lips, saggy cheeks, an increase in nasal-labial creases, the so-called “falling face” and the infamous “turkey neck”.
Why suffer with Symptoms while safe, natural therapies are available?
There are different methods of BHRT. Creams, patches, Injections and Pellets are the most commonly used methods. Each method has advantages and disadvantages.
