Weight Loss VS Body Recomposition
Losing Body weight is a great goal. However, it is important to recognize that an Ideal Weight loss program should focus on losing Body fat, while conserving Muscle and maintaining adequate hydration. Most weight loss programs focus merely on losing weight, but not on how the body composition changes.
BMI is defined as Weight in Kg / (Height in meters )2. BMI alone is a poor indicator of Body composition. For example, a very fit & healthy Muscular athlete who has 5% body fat with a BMI of 28 is considered Overweight! Therefore, weight loss based purely on BMI is not the best way to get to an Ideal healthy state.
The most important goal of Weight loss is to reduce the risk of Heart Disease and Stroke. Visceral fat is the deep fat stored in the Belly around the Internal organs (Pancreas, Intestines, Liver). Visceral fat secretes a protein called Retinol binding protein 4(RBP4), which is responsible for Insulin resistance. A reduction in the Visceral Fat, has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of Heart Attacks and Strokes. Therefore, a better way of looking at Weight loss is to analyze the Body composition and work towards changing the Body composition (Re-composition) of the body.
The most Ideal way of calculating the desired body weight would be based on desired Body Fat percentages.
The following is a table of Body fat percentage ranges in Women and Men based on Activity levels:
The formula for calculating Ideal Body weight based on Body Fat % is:
- Ideal Body Weight = Lean Body Mass / (1-Desired Body fat %)
These weight reduction treatments include the injection of HCG, a drug which has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration as safe and effective in the treatment of obesity or weight control. There is no substantial evidence that it increases weight loss beyond that resulting from caloric restriction, that it causes a more attractive or “normal” distribution of fat or that it decreases the hunger and discomfort associated with calorie-restricted diets.
